Brooklyn’s Walls Speak

“People say graffiti is ugly, irresponsible and childish... but that's only if it's done properly” - Banksy

A lot of today's street art can be traced back to Brooklyn and the early hip hop scene of the late 1970s. The walls of Brooklyn provide a canvas to the artist revolution occurring in the city. I’ve seen people taking guided tours around the borough wanting to learn more about the graffiti artists and their inspirations. Brooklyn’s walls speak. The have more to say about the life that surrounds us, hidden beneath the city’s grunge. It’s a form of expression, a very loud one, that gives color to the city.

Places like Williamsburg and Bushwick are open cathedrals for such art. You can spend hours deciphering each rendering, as you weave in and out of shops and cafes. To know Brooklyn, and to get a feel for its culture it’s best to look out into the streets. Graffiti is the voice of the people, and in such a diverse place, the images are unique. No wall is the same.
